Support in the Right Direction
Self-Directed Support (SDS) in Scotland
Self-Directed Support (SDS) is the approach used to deliver social care in Scotland, empowering individuals with the freedom to choose and control the services they receive.
The 3 Options of SDS
There are three primary options for accessing SDS:
- Direct Payments
- Individual Service Fund
- Local Authority Arranged Support
You can also combine these options to tailor the support you receive to your needs.
Support through SDS is only available after a social work assessment. If you need assistance navigating this process, please click here.
Employing Personal Assistants (PAs)
As part of the SDS process, you may decide to employ a Personal Assistant (PA). There are two main ways to do this:
- Becoming an Employer
You can hire a PA directly and take on the responsibilities of an employer. - Using a Self-Employed PA
Alternatively, you may choose to work with a self-employed PA.
For more detailed information, please view the SDS PA Handbook.
If you opt to become an employer, we're here to support you every step of the way. Voluntary Action Lochaber offers payroll services to help. Call them on 01397 706 044 for more information.
