Urram is a charity that has been established to deliver the best possible care for the residents of Acharacle, Ardgour, Morvern, Sunart and West Ardnamurchan by working with the community, NHS Highland and other partners.
Background
Urram was created as a result of the sudden and unexpected closure of Dail Mhor Care Home in Strontian by NHS Highland in August 2017. Representatives of the five local Community Councils formed a Working Group to lobby for its reopening. However, it became apparent that the residential care model in place before closure was no longer supported by the NHS. The Working Group engaged with local NHS representatives to identify what could constitute a viable care model for our small, rural community. After a year of hard work, and as a first step, Dail Mhor was reopened to deliver respite care in the summer of 2018. Funding was secured for a part time Project Officer and a new Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation called ‘Urram’ was formed.
Dail Mhor redevelopment
Since early 2020, and in consultation with NHS Highland and Highland Council (the Dail Mhor site owners) Urram have been carefully putting together a plan for its redevelopment. As well as the care home, the site currently houses a number of buildings which are not fit for purpose, including an empty primary school, an old village hall, and a doctor’s surgery. As of October 2020, a Board of Trustee’s has been established, the first draft of a design for a replacement care hub and new village hall has been drawn up, and NHS Highland are in favour of the flexible care provision Urram is planning for the facility.
Our vision
Urram envisages a time when all care services in the area are either delivered by, or in, cooperation with them; working with NHS Highland, Highland Hospice, Highland Council and other appropriate partners. The aim is for care to be flexible and provided in a way that it is responsive to the needs of this community.
