What is a Personal Assistant (PA)?
A PA provides assistance to individuals who need support with daily activities. Being a PA can be a very varied and rewarding job. Each client you work with will have their own individual needs and goals. As a PA you will be able to choose to work with people who require personal care, domestic support or a combination of both. You can be either employed or self employed.
PA Personal Care Tasks
- Assisting with daily living activities.
- Help with bathing, dressing etc .
- Mobility assistance and transfers.
- Supporting continence care and toileting needs.
- Ensuring comfort and dignity.
PA Domestic Support Tasks
- Assisting with general household management and chores.
- Food preparation and serving meals.
- Shopping and other errands.
- Facilitating independence and client control.
- Providing companionship.
- Monitor general health and well being.
General Information
- From April 2025 all PA’s are legally required to be a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups ( PVG) scheme.

- They are able to give you access to Union support and advice.
- Voluntary action Lochaber are able to support employers with monthly payroll, tax and National Insurance payments.
- Extended family members can sometimes be considered as a PA if there is agreement from the social work team.
- If you are in receipt of the state pension and find you need a little support, you may be entitled to claim attendance allowance. To get more information phone the Highland Council welfare team on 0800 090 1004.
